The Grill House

grill-dscn0008BarBBQ Bill got a new BBQ grill for Father’s Day last year (it’s also his birthday presents and his Father’s Day presents and his Christmas presents for the next 20 years).

We discovered the new BBQ grill can’t be left out naked in the rain.  Rain runs in the back and down into the grease collection tray and that overflows and…I will spare you the gory details of the yucky clean-up.

Tarps and vinyl covers haven’t worked very well (I accidentally did the tarp on a slightly-too-hot grill thing-not a smart move), so what to do?

Solution: build a grill house. In lieu of fixing the large hole in the living room ceiling that’s been there since 1996.  Why do you think we call it “Better Gardens Than Home”?  The Grill House is officially (per BarBBQ Bill’s definition) part of the “Garden”, not the “Home”.  He does have his priorities.

After much designing, measuring, more designing, more measuring, and ordering materials, we’re ready to start. Step 1 is to drag out every power tool and power tool attachment and accessory gizmo known to mankind (all of which BarBBQ Bill owns) and place them inside the house on every bare horizontal surface.  Floors are especially good for this.

I think this is my incentive to “help get ‘er done” so I can walk through the front door into my office without stubbing my toe on a chain saw.

1-dscn0007Build the side supports first…

2-dscn0008Plumb and level? Yep.

3-dscn0001Time for the rafters.

4-dscn0008Next day, rafters complete!

5-dscn0011I’m just about done staining.

6-dscn0003Plywood roof decking on and grill under cover!

7-dscn0348Finally the shingles are on.  All stained.  Ta-da!

Now, of course, we must accessorize.

A shade to match the deck cushions.

10-dscn0004A light.

9-dscn0002Handmade iron pot racks (do you think he has enough barbecue gizmos?)

We bought the pot racks on eBay.  They were made (just for us) by a very talented gentleman from California, whose seller name is oddmetalart.  We just love them.

Gramma Greenjeans, I would like to commend you on your patience with the ever crafty BBQ Bill…We all know how he can be… just look at the bright side, no more wondering what to get him for his birthday presents and his Father’s Day presents and his Christmas presents for the next 20 years although I have heard that he may need a new lounge chair to “work off” all that pizza he cooks

    Blake,
Do you REALLY think he’s going to quit whining about wanting (excuse me, I meant NEEDING) more presents? You know him better than that!
